Rotherham near deal for former Forest & QPR forward

The Sheffield Star reports that Rotherham United have offered a contract to free agent striker Dexter Blackstock. The experienced forward is without a club after it was mutually agreed on Deadline Day that he would be released from his contract at Nottingham Forest.

The 30-year-old spent over five years at the City Ground, scoring 45 goals for the two-time European Champions after signing from Queens Park Rangers, originally on loan, before it was made permanent for an undisclosed fee.

Alan Stubbs was desperately trying to add another striker to his Millers squad on Deadline Day but failed to do so. They had been linked with the likes of Tom Bradshaw and Adam Armstrong over the summer, but the former Hibs boss failed to add in this department. Matt Derbyshire left at the end of last season as well.

Blackstock certainly wouldn’t be the first former Forest man to end up at Rotherham in recent years. Lee Camp, Kelvin Wilson, Danny Collins and Greg Halford, all on the books at the New York Stadium, had previously played their football with the Reds.

Rotherham are not said to be the only club looking to add the free agent to their roster. With the transfer window closed, clubs can only sign up free agents up until the window reopens again in January. Stubbs is adamant that he needs another forward and the experience of Blackstock could be a useful asset in the coming months. He could potentially make his debut at home to Bristol City this weekend.
